The role of electrophysiology in diagnosis
Electrophysiologic assessments evaluate the auditory pathway and vestibular system. Depending on the case, ABR, VEMP, ECochG, ENG or a combination may be used to clarify neural hearing and balance function.
Test types
One or more tests are selected based on clinical need.
ABR
Measures brainstem responses to sound; useful for the auditory neural pathway, especially in infants and complex cases.
VEMP
Assesses part of the vestibular system via muscle responses to sound; helps evaluate balance disorders.
ECochG
Records electrical responses from the cochlea and auditory nerve; helps refine diagnosis of inner-ear and early auditory pathway disorders.
ENG
Evaluates eye movements and vestibular function for dizziness and balance problems.
Combined testing
When needed, ABR, VEMP, ECochG and ENG are combined for a fuller picture of hearing and balance pathways.

How to prepare
A few short tips for better test quality.

Bring current medications and medical history related to hearing or balance.

Avoid eye makeup or products around the eyes before ENG, if that test is planned.

For ABR in infants/children, coordinating a calm or sleep-friendly time helps.

Bring prior hearing results, imaging or specialist reports.

If you have acute illness, fever or an active ear infection, reschedule as advised.
